When the puck dropped this morning, the FireCats were basically
playing for pride. They were all but guaranteed to play in the
consolation game later this afternoon, after dropping their first
two games. Their pride was showing, however, as they took it to the
first place Vaughan Panthers team in the opening period. The
FireCats scored the lone goal of the period at the four minute mark,
taking the 1-0 lead into intermission. The second was kind of a
snoozer from a fans perspective, as the two teams skated up and down
the rink, but generated little in the way of scoring chances.
Because of this, the third period would prove to be pivotal in
deciding the outcome.
Unfortunately for the FireCats players and fans, it was the
Panthers who scored first, just less than halfway through the
period. The goal didn't deflate the FireCats, though, as they kept
coming at the Panthers. Two and half minutes after giving up the
lead, the FireCats took it right back, scoring a goal to make it a
2-1 game. 20 seconds later they did it again, grabbing a 3-1 lead
over the Panthers. That would turn out to be enough, as time would
expire, giving the FireCats their first victory in Buffalo. Let's go
