With the top four overall seeds advancing to the semi-final
round, the Novi FireCats found themselves in third place, facing off
against the second place Cheektowaga Warriors this morning for a
chance to play for the championship. The first period was a tough
battle between two evenly matched teams, with the defenses
dominating as the offenses searched for an opening. Both teams got
stellar goaltending, and the period would end in a scoreless tie.
The second period put an end to the feeling out process, as the
Warriors finally broke through to grab the lead from the FireCats.
Despite giving up the goal, the FireCats didn't give up their
effort. They continually attacked, before finally sneaking on in for
the game tying goal. With things evened up once again, the FireCats
kept up their offensive onslaught. Although it didn't result in a
bunch of goals, despite all of their good looks, it gave them an
opportunity to grab the lead after scoring once more. They took
their 2-1 lead into the final intermission, with 13 minutes keeping
them from an appearance in the championship game.
Even though they were still attacking the net, the FireCats found
themselves in a tie game when the Warriors evened things up midway
through the third. This game quickly turned into a nail biter, and
neither team was willing to fold. The battle continued on, but it
was the FireCats who finally broke the tie with a goal of their own
this period, giving them a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
When the final buzzer sounded, the FireCats players gathered around
their goalie for a brief celebration after moving on to this
afternoon's championship game.
