Tonight's contest got off to a good start for the Riverview Ice
Sharks, thanks in part to a Wiregrass Bulls penalty just 90 seconds
into the game. At the 12:17 mark the Ice Sharks converted on their
power play opportunity with a sharp angle shot from the left side,
grabbing the early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately the lead only lasted a
mere three minutes. With Drew screening the Wiregrass goal keeper in
his offensive zone, the Bulls gained control of the puck and took
off on a breakaway, which they converted to tie the game at 1-1.
Five minutes later they would net their second goal of the game, as
a Wiregrass skater weaved through the Riverview defense to bury a
wrist shot into the top right corner of the net, giving them a 2-1
lead. On his next shift, Drew would find himself hustling back on
defense to back check a Bulls player, taking the puck away and
giving the Ice Sharks a scoring opportunity. Unfortunately they were
unable to convert, leaving the score at 2-1. With just over a minute
remaining, Wiregrass would once again find themselves on the
scoreboard, this time thanks to a nice pass from the corner of the
ice that led to a wrist shot that settling into the top corner of
the net. The 3-1 score would hold until the intermission.
Wiregrass had an answer to the Riverview fast start in the first
period with one of their own in the second, as they managed to score
just 80 seconds in. Their initial shot trickled through the
Riverview goalie's five-hole but went just wide of the net. They
pounced on the puck, passing it out front for an easy tip-in as the
Ice Sharks goalie never reacted after believing that the five-hole
shot went in. That made it a 4-1 score. The two teams would trade
penalties before the next score took place, this one coming on a
shot that slowly trickled through the Riverview goalie's five-hole,
this time finding the back of the net for a 5-1 lead. Wiregrass
would dominate the puck over the final eight minutes of the period,
but thankfully they would not score again.
The fast starts continued in the third period, with Riverview
once again once again finding the back of the net just 15 seconds
in, thanks to a mini-breakaway that found its way through the
Wiregrass goalie's five-hole. The score narrowed the gap to 5-2, but
that would be it for the scoring tonight. Riverview found themselves
in the penalty box too many times to gain any momentum, and the
Wiregrass team was once again able to dominate the shots on goal. A
tough way to lose, especially after such a promising start to two of
the three periods. Next game, Sharks. |
