Jayden and her Riverview Sharks teammates travelled to Freedom
High School in Tampa to take on the Patriots in game number thirteen
on the season. The Sharks went with a non-traditional lineup for
them, playing some girls out of position and some who don't see
regular time during the season. Despite dominating in shots on goal,
the scoring wasn't where it probably would have been had the normal
Riverview starters been on the field. On their fourth shot of the
game, at just under twenty minutes of action complete, the Sharks
finally got on the scoreboard. They completed a nice pass back to an
open teammate, who was able to direct a long kick in net to the left
of the Patriots goalkeeper, making it a 1-0 game. That would be the
score heading into the first water break of the game. Riverview was
back at it once action resumed, scoring on their next shot on goal.
Their attacking player faked out a Freedom defender, and fired an
easy shot around the goalkeeper for a 2-0 score. Despite outshooting
Freedom 8-1 over the course of the opening half, the 2-0 score would
hold until halftime.
Freedom opened the second half with the first shot on goal, but
it was Riverview who opened the scoring, widening their lead to 3-0
just four minutes in. Like their opening goal, they completed a pass
to the middle of the field that resulted in a long kick over the
Patriots keeper. It took a while, but Riverview made it a 4-0 game
following a nice drive up the left sideline, on a shot that went
across the net and in. The Patriots would get their first goal of
the game on a penalty kick, on a kick that went to the left of the
stationary Sharks keeper. The Sharks went back on the attack after
the PK goal, scoring their fifth goal on another long shot, this one
over the outstretched arms of the Freedom keeper. A short while
later they would make it a 6-1 game, this time after the Freedom
keeper came out to challenge for the ball, and the Riverview
attacked was able to maneuver around and net an easy shot on goal.
Following the water break, Freedom would be rewarded with a direct
kick on goal. Thankfully the Sharks keeper would make the initial
save, but there was nobody there but Patriots players to corral the
rebound, knocking it in for a 6-2 score. The next two goals came off
the foot of Riverview attackers, and bother of them were virtually
identical plays. On both, they were able to drive through the
Freedom defense to fire shots across the net and in. The score was
now 8-2. The ninth Sharks goal came on a drive down the right side
of the field, and the ensuing shot went off of the left goalpost and
in. The goal that ended things came off of a Riverview play that
resulted in a pass across the field, and another shot that soared up
and over the Freedom goalie. That made it a 10-2 game, and the eight
goal differential mercy rule kicked in, ending things at that
moment. Way to end the season on a high note Sharks! |
