Jayden and her Riverview Lady Sharks soccer teammates qualified
for the FHSAA girls soccer tournament once again, traveling across
Tampa to face off against the Alonso Ravens at Alonso High School
for the second year in a row, this time in the class 7A district 11
district tournament quarterfinal game. The Lady Sharks were once
again the lower seed, thus not the favorite in this matchup.
Riverview got the first shot of the game, and almost the first goal
just a minute in, but their shot clanged off the upright and caromed
out. The Sharks were able to keep the Ravens off the board for the
first 15 minutes of the game, having saved their first two shots.
The third shot broke the ice for Alonso, however, as the Riverview
keeper came way out of the net to challenge for the ball, but the
Ravens attacker was able to navigate around her and shoot into a
wide open net to make it a 1-0 game. Riverview managed the final
shot on net before the two sides took the mandatory water break. The
first shot coming out of the water break came in part due to a
Riverview mistake, as they were unable to clear the zone, Alonso
took control, and fired a long kick from outside of the box high
over the Sharks keeper's head. That goal made it a 2-0 score. Alonso
continued their attack, but Riverview was able to make the required
saves on their next four attempts. With just over three minutes to
play, Alonso would score again, making it a3-0 game, a score that
would stand as the opening half came to a close.
The second half was all Alonso, as Riverview only managed a
single shot on goal. On their second attempt of the half, the Ravens
made it a 4-0 game, on a call that certainly appeared to be a missed
offsides call, allowing the Ravens attacker to race down the field
and kick the shot past the Sharks keeper. Less than three minutes
later Alonso would fire another long shot over the head of the
Riverview keeper, making it a 5-0 score. Alonso would keep applying
the pressure, and once again outran the Sharks defense and fired a
long shot into the back of the net, making the score 6-0 in their
favor. They would make it a 7-0 game a short while later, on another
long kick (they had a couple of girls with strong kicks from
distance!). The nail in the coffin goal for the Ravens came when the
Sharks keeper came out once again to challenge the attacking player,
couldn't make the play, and allowed an easy shot into the wide open
net as a result. The Lady Sharks season came to an end with the 8-0
defeat, as the mercy rule ended the game at that point. Certainly
not the outcome that the Lady Sharks wanted in this game, but they
should be proud of their season regardless after qualifying for the
playoffs. Great job girls! |
