Home Up

Friday, May 1st, 2026

I drove to East Lansing in Jayden's new car to meet her at her dorm for her final move-out day. She had already moved out the majority of her items with the help of Tyler and Drew, but today was the official final time in this room. We had to load up the last of her belongings, turn in her keys, and say goodbye to her friends and Phillips Hall for the last time.

After moving Jayden out of her dorm for the last time, we made the drive over to Grand Rapids. We first met up with Tara, who had flown into Grand Rapids from San Diego, at a local Freddy's, as we were all hungry from a day with no meals. We just grabbed snacks, as we were on a time crunch to get to the Van Andel Arena for Hana's graduation from Grand Valley State University.

After dropping Jay's car off at a nearby Meijer, we made the drive in Tara's rental to the arena to find parking. Drew & Teagan were joining us for the celebration, so we were trying to keep in touch with them as we parked. Although parking was a challenge (getting into the garage was easy, finding a spot was not), so Tara dropped off Jay and I so we could go in to find seats. Drew & Teagan had parked in a different garage, and they ended up meeting Jay and I inside. The four of us headed off to find seats as Tara was making her way inside. We found seats that were directly in front of where Hana was on the floor, and Tara joined us shortly after we were seated.

The ceremony itself wasn't too bad, aside from there being a lot of kids graduating! Steve Wozniak was the keynote speaker, and though he rambled a bit he was still an interesting listen. Anytime Jay talked to and of us, a lady in the row in front of us gave the the evil eye. Never said anything, just stared. It wasn't as if we were being terribly loud or disrespectful! That same lady then went about picking through her daughters hair, like a monkey picking bugs from a fellow monkey. Just weird.

After watching Hana cross the stage and receive her diploma, we all headed out of the arena. We met up with Hana's parents and sibling outside of the arena for the first time. Although we offered them to join us, they declined, so Drew, Teagan, Jay, Hana, Tara, and I headed out to Applebee's (one of Hana's favorites!) for dinner. Once we finished our meal, Drew & Teagan left to head back home. The rest of us headed off to Meijer to turn officially hand over the VW to Jay. At that point we all said our goodbye's for the night - Jay & Hana headed back to Hana's house while Tara & I made the drive back to Burtan to crash for the night!

All in all a full but enjoyable day!
