Something strange happened during tonight's game for
Samantha and her Michigan Impact teammates that I've never seen happen in any of
the kids sports before. After starting the game, action was halted due to an
injury. At that point, play failed to resume even after the injured player left
the field. Apparently the referee's were refusing to work for fear of not
getting paid. It seems that the opponent for tonight's game forfeited for not
having enough members of the team show up. The girls wound up playing the LA
Stars, who had played the game prior to this contest, once the refs got
assurance that they would be paid for their services. Officially the game was
recorded as a 4-0 win for the Impact team, but in reality the game wound up
being a 1-1 draw between the two teams on the field. Sam's team was short
players themselves, as they only had one sub for the game, and their regular
goalkeeper was absent as well. They wound up with their two of their three best
defenders off the field (one absent, one in goal) for much of the game.
