Since Drew and his '05 Storm hockey team has been
eliminated from the playoffs and there is nothing left of the season beyond
practices, the coaches decided to schedule a couple of scrimmages for the kids
to help break up the routine just a bit and keep them in game shape. The first
of those scrimmages took place today against the 05 Michigan Travelers, a team
that beat the Storm twice during the regular season, once by a 5-3 score and
once by a 2-1 margin. Things looked promising today for the Storm team, after
battling through a scoreless first period they managed to take a 2-0 lead in the
second. All they had to do was hold on for 13 minutes in the third and they
would secure a victory. Unfortunately they weren't able to do so, in part due to
shaky defense by Drew (I still don't like him on the back end, though he may
eventually get used to it). While he had a couple of shots on goal from the
point, he also had a couple of crucial turnovers late as well as getting caught
out of position a couple of times. He took a beating today, though, getting
tripped down to the ice and landing flat on his back once (on a play where no
penalty was called) and also taking a shot to the stomach on another play. He
kept playing, however, showing that he can be tough when his team needs him. The
2-2 tie wasn't the result that anyone was looking for, but it represents real
progress by the team. Let's keep it up!
