This game marked the final game of the tournament for Drew and
his Jr. Everblades teammates, as they would face off against the
Atlanta Kings - yet another team that should be playing up a level.
Needless to say things went about as expected, with the Kings get on
the scoreboard early and often, scoring 5 goals over the course of
the period. The second period started out with more of the same,
as the Everblades took an early penalty that led to an Atlanta goal
that reopened the floodgates. It was 8-0 before the coaches of the
two teams got into a bit of a screaming match on the benches, thanks
in large part to some late hits coming from the Kings biggest
players that went uncalled. That seemed to fire up the Everblades a
bit, as they played much stronger over the game's final 20+ minutes.
It was after that blowup that they would score their only goal of
the game, thanks to a wrist shot that got behind the Kings goalie.
Atlanta would score one final goal in the third period, but that
period was highlighted by some fireworks between the two teams, as
the refs let things get a little physical on the ice, and words were
exchanged in the stands as well (thankfully I was standing on the
glass opposite the stands and didn't have to deal with it). When the
final horn sounded, the Kings came out on top by a 9-1 score.
The fireworks didn't end on the ice, however, as the two teams
wound up coming together in the space between the two locker rooms.
Thankfully nothing much came from it, aside from some words being
exchanged and maybe a slight punch or two between the players, as it
was able to be broken up before the situation got out of hand. |
