March 19th, 2020

61/48°, Partly Cloudy

We slept in this morning, for the first time on the trip, before eating breakfast at home. We all took turns showering and getting ready before deciding it was time to head out for the day.

Tucson Drive

Some of the mountains that we drove through on our way to Old Tucson...

Today’s stop was Old Tucson, a movie studio and theme park with a “town” that was built for filming movies. Columbia Pictures built the original buildings in 1939 for the movie Arizona (1940), starring William Holden and Jean Arthur. Tohono O’odham tribal members built more than 50 buildings in 40 days, many of which are still standing today. It was tough for us to get into most of the buildings, as we had never seen any of the movies that they were from. The park did put on a couple of shows that were fun, however, so we did get to enjoy those, and the scenery was beautiful.

There was also a zip line ride at the park, and Drew and Jayden got a chance to ride it. The Outlaw Zipline is a target shooting zipline, meaning you use a gun to shoot at targets as you traversed the length of the zipline. Drew got to go first, and he hit 93 points, which earned him a second trip down. Jay was up next, but the zipline operator sent her down spinning in circles and as a result she didn’t hit a single target. She got a second chance too, though this time she went down upside down!

After leaving we settled on pizza for dinner, but we didn’t want any of the chain places. Tara found a place to order take-out from, but when we asked Jerry & Gail wanted and we were told they had stuff at home, so we ordered enough for ourselves, picked it up, and headed home. After dinner we spent the rest of the evening relaxing and getting ready for bed.
