All non-senior players remaining on the varsity and junior
varsity Ice Sharks hockey teams, along with any incoming players who
are interested in playing with the Riverview team during the 2022-23
season were pooled together and placed on one of two teams - blue or
grey - for the spring season. Drew was selected for the Riverview
Ice Sharks Blue team, and they took to the ice at the TGH Ice Plex
tonight for their first game of the season. After giving up the
first shot of the game, the Ice Sharks went on the attack, reeling
off 8 straight shots before they took back-to-back penalties, which
derailed any momentum they had built up. The first penalty came a
little over two and half minutes into the play, when they were
called for hooking. Three minutes into the action a second Riverview
penalty was called, this time as Drew reached with his stick and
wound up taking a tripping penalty. The Bloomingdale squad would
make them pay, scoring on a 5v3 advantage to take a 1-0 lead a
little over four minutes in. A Bloomingdale penalty gave the
Riverteam their own man advantage, but it was Bloomingdale who would
find the net, scoring shorthanded on a backhand shot to make the Ice
Sharks deficit two goals. The Ice Sharks finally broke through with
a little under three minutes remaining, tapping a rebound into the
back of the Rajun' Bulls net to make it a 2-1 game. With just over
two minutes remaining the Bulls would score again, this time
backhanding a shot through the 5-hole to retake their two goal lead.
They would snipe home their fourth goal of the period with just 11.5
seconds remaining, finding the top left corner of the net on a
wrister to make it a 4-1 game heading into the first intermission.
The second period was pretty even in terms of shots on goal, with
each team trading opportunities. Unfortunately for fans of the Ice
Sharks, the only team that was able to take advantage of their
chances were the Bulls. On their first goal of the period, a
Bloomingdale skater deked out two Riverview defenders on the way to
scoring their fifth goal of the game, making it a 5-1 score midway
through. They would tack on their sixth goal with just under two
minutes to play, sliding a shot underneath the Ice Sharks
goaltenders pads, giving them a 6-1 lead. That would be the score
going into the third period.
The final period was once again played pretty evenly in terms of
shots on goal, but this time it was the Riverview side that was able
to take advantage of their chances. They would tap-in a rebound just
over two minutes in, narrowing the gap to 6-2 and giving them hope
for a comeback. Unfortunately, they couldn't capitalize again until
the game was almost over. A late Bloomingdale penalty gave the
Riverview team an extra attacker, and with 3 seconds left they
managed to score their final goal of the game, this time on another
tip-in off of a rebound. The final buzzer would sound with the Ice
Sharks on the wrong end of a 6-3 score. Next game Sharks! |
