Although the varsity team would be taking on the Spoto Spartans
tonight, that school doesn't have enough players to field a JV team
as well, so Jayden and her Riverview Lady Sharks JV teammates would
have to settle for a rematch against the Lennard Longhorns, whom
they lost 31-6 back on March 7th. Although this game didn't go the
way that the Sharks players and fans would have liked, it was a
least a closer contest than that game. The Longhorns got the ball
to start, and they marched down the field on a long, methodical
drive that resulted in the first touchdown of the game. Lennard
missed the pass on their extra point attempt, so the score would be
6-0 in favor of the Longhorns. Riverview would take possession of
the ball, but promptly went three and out after a bad snap set them
back 10 yards. Their next two pass attempts were succesful, but they
couldn't make up the lost ground and would have to punt the ball
away. Lennard got the ball back in the first quarter, but it would
come to an end after a single play, as they would continue their
drive in the second period. After a personal foul penalty against
the Sharks moved the Longhorns to just shy of midfield, they would
turn the ball over on downs thanks to three straight incomplete
passes. The next Shark drive wasn't a good one, as they would throw
an incomplete pass before throwing a bad interception. Lennard would
take advantage of their excellent field position, scoring on a
running play on their first play from scrimmage to make a 12-0 game.
A successful pass on their extra point attempt made it a 13-0 score.
Riverview would take over possession of the football, but couldn't
drive past midfield once again, and would wind up punting the ball
away. Riverview would end the next Lennard possession by snagging an
interception of their own, for their first of the game.
Unfortunately for the Sharks, time would run out on the half while
they were driving down the field, ending the half down by a 13-0
score.
Riverview got the ball to start the second half, and they had
some success, picking up a first down before being forced to settle
for another punt. Unfortunately, their punt was blocked (the first
time I've seen that in flag football, since there is no rush!).
Lennard took over with good field position, and they ran four
straight positive yardage plays that resulted in their third
touchdown of the game. They weren't successful on their extra point
attempt, so the score would be 19-0. Riverview would take over
possession as the third quarter wound down, and would maintain it
into the early part of the fourth. Though they managed to move the
ball a bit, another interception would halt their momentum. Lennard
got the ball near midfield, but Riverview answered back with an
interception of their own on the first play of the drive to take the
ball back. The ensuing Sharks drive started off with a first down on
their first play, but their second play resulted in yet another
interception. Once again the Longhorns started near midfield, and
they too picked up a first down on their first play, but they
matched Riverview by throwing another interception on their second
play. It seems nobody wanted the ball at this point! Riverview took
over just shy of midfield themselves, but once again their drive was
halted before it could pick up steam thanks to yet another
interception. The Longhorns would run out the clock, ending the game
with the score still 19-0 in their favor. |
