Home Up

Here are some more pictures from our time at the locks. You might notice that I only have pictures of two of the three freighters that passed through the locks during our time here. There are two reasons for that... one, my camera batteries died. I do have a couple of extra sets that I carry with me, but that gets me to reason two: the kids were getting bored and hungry, and my camera bag managed to make it down from the lookout area with the rest of our group while Dad and I remained behind to take in as much of the action as we could.

Soo Locks - Sault Ste. Marie

The ground workers reboarding the ship as it begins to be lowered in the lock.

A look across the ship shows that it is now below ground level.

A look at the conveyor arm on the ship.

A look at the engine housing on the rear of the freighter, with the second ship in the background.

The second freighter of the day, which happened to be the 1,000 foot long one, entering the second lock.

A look at the entire length of the ship. It has a #1 on the rear building - not sure if that is because it is the biggest ship on the Great Lakes or not.

The first ship churning up the water as it leaves the lock.

A look at the new viewing tower from our picnic area. The tower looks pretty, but the angled glass on the front severely limits the available sightlines.

Jayden counting as the kids played hide and seek while the adults finished their lunches.

Tara & Rod keeping up to date on the latest info on their phones while Gary picks up a bag from lunch.

Drew standing around during the game of hide and seek.

Tyler and Drew peeking around the corner, hoping to not be found.

After lunch we loaded back into our vehicles to make the drive to the Tahquamenon Falls. Although the kids were primarily interested in the lower falls (swimming!), I wanted to pay a visit to the upper falls as well. We've talked about trying to camp here at some point in the future, and if we do I will make the 4 mile walk between the two!

Upper Tahquamenon Falls

A downed tree spotted on our walk to the falls.

Tyler, Donovan, and Marissa walking ahead of Tara, Jayden, and Erica.

Another downed tree spotted on the path to the falls.

This tree root looked pretty cool, coming out of the ground a fair distance before heading back under.

Our first look at the upper falls, from one of the viewing stations.

Another look at the upper falls.

A closer view of the falls.

There wasn't nearly as much money in the river this time around, at least compared to this photo taken during our last visit.
