Home Up

With our time on the High Ropes over, it was back to the dining hall to sample another gourmet meal. This time it was goulash and peas. I wasn't even going to attempt to eat it, but I thought - "Hey, I like goulash. I'll give it a shot!" Too bad, as it was full of onions. I struck out completely on this meal! Sam settled for XXXXX.

Dinner At The Dining Hall

Goulash and peas. Not much to say about that...

After dinner it was time to play the Eco-Games. There were a few different games played here, but none of them were overly remarkable. In fact I only recall one of them, and it basically consisted of a few kids in the middle of the field, and they had to call out a trait of an animal ("It has teeth" for example). If that trait matched the animal the rest of the kids had chosen, they had to run across the field without being tagged. If they got tagged, they had to turn into a tree. The tree could then tag the runners, but without moving their feet. Otherwise the rest of the games were rather forgettable...

Eco-Games

Samantha lined up to play one of the Eco-Games.

Once tagged, Sam and her classmates had to turn into trees. Trees could tag other runners, but could not move their feet.

The final activity of the day was square dancing. I must admit, when I saw that on the list I almost yearned for Smoklerville, but it turned out to be a lot of fun for the kids. All of the chaperones got stuck doing the example dance (my partner was a Camp Tamarack employee), but after that it was all up to the kids. Some of the boys refused to dance with girls, while other boys did their best to avoid dancing with another boy. The girls didn't seem to care who they danced with, it was fun no matter who their partner was. The songs weren't the catchiest, but I caught the kids singing them for the rest of our stay at camp. At the end the counselor coordinating the evening's activities called some of the kids up on stage to sing the final song to dance to, and of course Sam volunteered. She, along with some of her classmates, belted out as much of .fun's "We Are Young" as they could muster, and did a rousing job of it. I was so proud of how Sam didn't shy away when she got in front of the microphone. I guarantee I would have!

Square Dance

Samantha and her classmates lined up to do their first square dance of the night.

Sam and her classmates clapping as two of the chaperones dance down the row.

Sam watching the others do their steps, waiting for her turn.

Sam cheering on her classmates.

Sam dancing arm in arm with another student - "right to the middle, left to the line!"

Sam high-fiving her way down the line.

Another shot of Sam, the singing sensation.
