After finishing their first game of the day, Jayden and her
Riverview Lady Sharks flag football teammates walked to the
neighboring field to take on the Sebring Blue Streaks in their final
game of the day, and of their season. As you can see by looking at
the score over the course of the game's four quarters, not a lot
happened for either team. Over the course of the first half, the two
teams combined to end drives with four punts, three interceptions,
and twice with unsuccessful fourth down attempts. Riverview probably
had the better offensive plays overall, but that wasn't saying
much...
The second half wasn't much better, as they once again combined
for four punts, three more interceptions, and another two failed
fourth down tries. With that kind of performances, it makes perfect
sense that the game would come to an end with a zero-zero tie.
Overtime would start with the Blue Streaks with the ball at their
ten yard line. A positive running play on first down was followed up
by an incomplete pass. They would once again run the ball on third
down, this time successfully for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. They
would convert on their extra point attempt as well, making it a 7-0
lead. The Sharks would get their turn on offense, and it looked
rough as it started. Two straight incomplete passes were followed up
by a short pass, leaving a fourth down attempt to keep their chances
alive. Thankfully they completed their fourth down attempt tor a
touchdown, and followed that up with a successful extra point
attempt to tie the game at 7-7.
The two teams would head to a second overtime, with the Sharks
getting the ball first this time. They scored a touchdown on their
first play from scrimmage, making it a 13-7 lead, before adding the
extra point to make it a 14-7 game. The Sebring team threw two
incomplete passes to start their drive, before picking up a few
yards on a third down running play. The Riverview defense would
stand tall on their fourth down play, keeping the Blue Streaks out
of the end zone, and giving the Sharks their first victory of the
season!
Despite the win, today wasn't all positive. These games were the
first time I was seated close enough to the field (much like a club
soccer game, we were seated right along the sideline, though behind
one of the teams). The negative behavior displayed by the coach was
a total shock. No matter how positive of a play the team made, it
wasn't good enough. Every player on the field heard about what they
did wrong throughout the game. I can almost guarantee that if the
girls on the team expressed this kind of negativity they would
either be kicked off the team or they would be forced to run laps.
It is also almost a certainty that this negativity is why Jayden
will not be returning to the sport next season... |
